RAN Discharge Certificate
I recently attended CMDR Ian Cook's farewell BBQ and was pleased to see that finally the RAN does more to acknowledge the service given by it's members on retirement and promotion. Certificates given today are worthy of framing and are a big improvement on the "Certificate" that most of us received, a piece of paper with our enlistment details. As many of you have received medals since discharging I recommend that you apply for an updated Certificate that lists your Awards. The address for details is at the is available at the Navy website

NEW AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE MEDAL
The new Australian Defence Medal design has been settled and the medal colours are black and red, colour of the Flanders poppy representing the Anzac spirit of the Australian Armed Forces. There are white stripes dividing the red into three, denoting the three Services, the white also denotes peace time service.
The Medal design....The obverse of the medal is based on the WW2 Volunteer Service Badge, it includes the Crown denoting the Sovereign, the wings of the RAAF, overlayed by the Army Rising Sun and then the RAN Anchor.

The reverse includes an Australian wreath of wattle with the Federation Star at the top centre and the words "FOR VOLUNTEER SERVICE" appear in the centre of the medal.

The Returned from active Service Badge (RASB) - is issued to all Armed forces personnel who served in 'war like' conditions of service. For many this was all the recognition they received for war service until 1992 when the Federal government issued various medals recognising service in war zones.
The Australian Active Service Medal 1945-75 - this medal is awarded for operational service during the Korean War, the Malayan Emergency, Confrontation with Indonesia and the Vietnam War. The medal is not issued without a clasp.
The following clasps have been issued for the medal: Korea, Malaya, Malaysia, Thailand, Thai/Malay, Vietnam, Gulf War 1 etc
VLSM - The Vietnam Logistic and Support Medal - this Medal was created in 1992 to recognise the service of Australian personnel who served in support roles during the Vietnam War. It recognises those Australian men and women who played a vital role in supporting the Vietnam campaign in difficult or potentially dangerous situations, but who did not qualify for the Vietnam Medal. It provided recognition in particular to personnel who served in naval ships providing logistic support to our troops in Vietnam.
AASM -The Australian Avtive Service Medal 1945-75 and Vietnam Clasp - this medal is awarded for service on ships in prescribed non-warlike operations. The medal is not issued without a clasp.
The following clasps have been issued for the medal: Berlin, FESR, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Kashmir, Korea, Middle East, PNG, SE Asia, SW Pacific, Special Ops, Thailand, W New Guinea etc.
DFSM - Defence Force service Medal - is awarded to all full-time service personnel following 15 years service. A clasp is issued for each 5 years additional service.
Don't forget to have your service certificate updated if you receive any medals or a RAS badge. Send a letter requesting the change to the RAN medals section:

This commemorative Medal is dedicated to all personnel who served in Logistic Support in the Vietnam war 1962 - 1973.
This medal is sponsored by the Veterans Federation of the Republic of Vietnam in Australia, to show their appreciation for personnel who served in Logistic Support, in conjunction with their own forces.
The first recipient of this award was Sir Edward Dunlop AC, CMG, OBE, KCSJ, for his fine work in Vietnam, and this honour was bestowed on him at a ceremony conducted in Melbourne on December 7th 1991.
The person whose name appears on the back of this medal, served in the Logistic Support field in Vietnam, and as such should be proud of their service to their country.
This medals set comes complete with a miniature, 12 inches of full size and 6 inches of miniature ribband.

Conditions for the purchase
To be eligible to purchase commemorative medals, from the HMAS SYDNEY & VLSVA (Vic), applicants will need to provide the following:
1. Photocopy of documentary evidence showing that you have been awarded the ASM with clasp FESR, AASM with clasp Vietnam, AV & LSM. or,
2. Photocopy of documentary evidence of posting to a ship that you feel entitles you to the medal. We will confirm your entitlement based on whether your ship was in the operational zone during your posting from our records of ships movements.
The ALSM Commemorative medal is for sale to all personnel who served in a Logistical Service roll in Vietnam and the FESR Commemorative medal is for sale to all sailors who served in the RAN FESR.
